I am looking at buying the Eee pc 701 from Ebuyer (£174) and just wondered if there was any other bits of equipment i will need to get it running. As you can tell i am not technical minded in the least!
We have Wireless broadband at home, and a regular PC and printer etc upstairs in our spare room, and I wanted a small laptop suitable for surfing downstairs whilst watching TV etc.
Will it simply plug into mains, pick up the wifi signal, and Bobs your uncle?
Please help
Thanks

Well on the face of it you will just be able to just switch it on and connect to your WiFi, enter your wep\wpa key if you have one set up and away you go.
If you do need help, wish to change anything or just wish to learn about your machine and linux take a look at eeeuser.com the wiki and forum they have is great.
Good luck.
Oh and just a quick note they are £179.99 in Toy R Us if you dont want to wait for the 5 day delivery from ebuyer and you should be able to choose your colour and have a play on one.The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

The only issue you may find is that many printers these days are Windows only so that may not work.
Failing that you should be fine.0 -

Many standard printers are supported by Linux - HP, Epson, Canon, Lxmark for example

What about virus protection? Will I need to run some kind of software on it also?
I have ordered an EEe PC from Ebuyer, but am now concerned that it could infect my home PC. I presume it does not come with any virus protection as it is a cheap machine.
What do people recommend? We have Norton on our home PC.

If you have bought the Linux one it does come with Anti Virus installed, Xandros Antivirus.
Hope you enjoy, I got mine this morning and am having fun already :-)The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

Linux doesn't suffer virii as much as windows. You have to give downloads permission to run, and can setup an admin/user system to stop them getting through

There is however an AV installed as standard for piece of mind
