Hello there, I hope I have the right place as this is my first post here, although I've spent all morning and half the afternoon reading.
My problem is that I've had a flood in my house, thank goodness I 'm insured. To cut a very long saga short, an assessor came around yesterday and promptly pulled up all my carpets and kitchen flooring and installed a HUGE dehumidifier and fan. He then decided to condemn 3 of my 7 kitchen base units saying that they would need to be pulled out and demolished. 2 of these make up my breakfast bar.
My question is, would I be insured for a new kitchen, due to the fact that the original one was hand made (by my OH, a joiner), and would not be able to be matched up to the rest of my kitchen?
I asked the assessor this, he said he didn't know as he was the 'flooring' assessor and no other assessors, buildings or contents, would not even entertain coming into my house until he has declared and certified that the floor, walls etc, are dry. this will take up to 2 weeks. (Argh, Christmas is coming). My washing machine and dish washer are also not working due to electrical damage from the water. He also told me not to switch on my kitchen light!
At the moment, I have no light, no washers and a forthcoming huge electricity bill due to the humidifier and fan.
I'm insured via my bank, First Direct, who use Norwich union.
Any thoughts or experiences would be gratefully appreciated by this newbie,
Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure whether they would replace the whole kitchen. I suspect they would ask you the cost of the units and give you money. Given that they are hand made, I suspect they'll ask for quotes from joiners to replace them. Is there no way that anyone could make new units which matched?
You'll have to wait for the assessor - it depends how generous they're feeling. At worst, you'll get the money to have a joiner create new units for you - given the cost of having custom units made up, this may be enough for most of a new kitchen!
