Just for info, he wasn't foreign and not that cheap. As I said in original post this guy had apparently been in the trade for longer than I've been alive! I took him on as he came highly recommended.

how much for how many units?

last week alone i looked at 3 jobs where foreign or unexperienced handymen had done a kitchen installation

people pay thousands on a kitchen then allow jack of no trades to attack it

cheap is anything less than a grand

part of the problem is that the consumer knows little about what makes a good job its not until the faults are pointed out that there realise there mistakes

HE WASN'T FOREIGN and he was meant to be qualified. 30+ years as a joiner surely doesn't make a jack of no trades???

I paid more for the fitting than the units. Does that make it a cheap job? I bought the best quality units that I could afford and as said previously went for a more expensive quote as he appeared to have more experience.

Yes I got conned but not by employing someone cheap.

I'm asking for advice to put this right not to give people a chance to a) attack me for making a mistake and b) having a racist rant about foreign workers when that clearly isn''t the issue here.

was not attacking anyone! apologies if you think this

send him a letter recorded delivery, give him 14 days to correct, if no response take him straight to moneyclaim.org

i would also get another kitchen fitter in to go thro his work and ask him to do a written statement of faults, i have been asked to do this before and would usually make a small charge for my time

im sure the threat of court action will get him back

My fitting cost me £250 and the two guys who done it started at 8am and finished at 6pm the same day. They are proper fitters with years experience. I think you've well and truely been had, Anna.

(woops ..pressed thanks by mistake!) ...They can (apparently !) fit a kitchen in 60 minutes on the 60 minute makeover !
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

I'm a single woman too and hate when I have to have workmen in to do work for me. It's all very well for others to criticise you about payments etc but when you live on your own it's a bit different from having an OH to let the workmen know what's what. Once your kitchen is fixed, try not to think about the bad experience you've had. Have your friends round for a meal, open a bottle of wine and relax and enjoy your new room!

i find it hard to believe these would be skilled craftsmen who have been thro a indentured apprenticeship

i could go and work for a employment agency, do less hours, have no books to do in my own time and still take home a better wage than that

Definately get another kitchen installer to go through the fit thoroughly and itemise any faults. Then get him to quote you for the cost of works to rectify said faults.
Then go to the small claims court to recover any costs incurred.

They're qualified and it was a cash sale, but their annual wage would not be over 30K. I live in N.Ireland where prices just aren't as high as mainland UK.

If you can work in an employment agency for more than 30K, tell me where abouts, as I might give it a shot?
