Cost of re-wiring old lamp?

Hey

I was wondering if anyone knew roughly how much a lamp re-wiring would be? its a late 60's/early 70's table lamp that boyf has brought back from his parents house and it has the 'old style' wires to the plug. I checked it by plugging it into the wall last night and it (turned all the other appliances off - fused??) the house.

Anyway - as boyf is determined to keep it, we need to get it re-wired. The plug looks reasonably new, and the bulb is brand new, the cable is two clear plastic tubes that are quite thin.

Anyone know who would do this kind of work and cheaply and at what cost?

P.S - if any electrician people in Bristol want a job then let me know!

Had a thought.Do you have any colleges near you teaching electrical installations?? Maybe take it in there & someone can do it for a project for a little donation??
  • OK, hubby and I have just had a 'lively discussion' about this. I say it's a really simple job that you could do yourself. He says it's a simple job IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, but if you're not sure, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS and if someone explains to you how to do it and something goes wrong (they leave something out or make a mistake) they will be liable!!!!

Anyway, hubby says the thing to do is find a small independent electrical shop if you can, and they may do it for you - but expect it to cost between £10-£25.

So unless you are particularly attached to this lamp, it would be a LOT cheaper to buy a new one :o (and a darn site safer than doing it yourself, says hubby).

Sorry if this isn't the answer you wanted, but it's far better to be safe than sorry
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • You must have a friend, neighbour or relative that would be able to this simple task for you?

Thanks for the replies! Im not too interested in electrics to be honest and my dad is a couple of hundred miles away - I think I wont risk it myself!

Ill have a look at the college idea though, thats a good one! Failing that i'll have to find an electrical shop. Id personally get a new one, but the OH is adamant its staying. I think ill make him go and get it sorted if he wants it to stay so badly! Men... Grrrrr...

You don't say if your lamp is metallic, but many old metallic lamps of this era had 2-core cable and were not earthed. If your lamp is of a metal construction, please ensure whoever refurbishes it uses 3-core cable so it can be adequately earthed.

If the lamp is metallic, and doesn't have a facility for earthing, then it should either be kept as an ornament (for any sentimental reason) or thrown away.

One final tip - when you've had it refurbished, ensure you have a 1A fuse fitted in the plug top.
