(Free) alternative to Word??

Hello all.

Apologies if this is a daft question :o

My few-months old laptop is running Vista but I had no idea that the Microsoft Office Word that's installed is a trial version. The main problem it's causing me is that I want to email my cv to job agencies and I want to change it but can't  because the trial period has expired. I've retyped the modified cv into Works but when I've emailed it to myself as an attachment, I can't open it. Other than paying for Office Word, are there any alternatives?

Thanks in advance.

Martyn.

Open office, it's very similar to MS Office and opens all MS files.

Or just for a change why not try Star Office, available as part of Google Pack.

For a nice lte alternative to Word try Abiword it is just a word processor so a smaller download and diskcost.

Edit:- Just had a thought are the files saved as .docx , .docm or just as .doc? as this will make a difference on what you can use.

i second abiword also; small footprint, small download. not as versatile as msword admittedly, but does the job:)

I think OpenOffice would make the best all-round MS Office replacement. I ahve MS Office only because it was a bargain under the Ultimate Steal during my student days :p, but before that I used OpenOffice nearly exclusively.

There's a new version coming, version 3.0 which is available in beta (use at your own risk) and will even open MS Office 2007 files. I've tried it and it's not very reliable right now, best to stick with the stable version 2.4.1.

Plus, learn OpenOffice in one environment and the look and feel is nearly the same no matter what you use in the future, be in Linux, Windows or Mac. :D

I'm about 60% of the way of getting Windows Server 2008 (Basically Vista) to install and work well on an EEE PC 901

Windows server 2008 on an Eee PC!, if it works, this could well be the worlds smallest server.

Asus sold-out when they agreed to put Window$ on their EEe PC range, I do however have a work colleague who has XP running (Just) on a 701 series.
