London to Reading (Return)

I live in Abbeywood, London and I have just gotten a job in Reading (9-5pm daily). The cheapest ticket I have found for a day is in the range of 30 pounds. Per week, It works out to be 98 pounds and 369 monthly. Any tips on getting it cheaper? Is there a way I can split the journey. I was told about going through staines (waterloo-staines-reading) but it takes an hour longer than normal. Any tips? Thanks

Assuming that £98 is a season ticket you are very unlikely to get it cheaper.

One thing to look at is seeing if any of the journey can be done using PAYG Oyster and only getting a season ticket for the sections you have to. No guarantees it will help though.

I doubt you will have any joy splitting the journey for such a short trip. Are your figures right? 30 pounds a day sounds a bit low as a standard return Reading to Paddington is 31 pounds so presumably the same in reverse and then you have Abbey Wood to Paddington. 98 pounds for a week seems a bit of a bargain compared to 30 pounds a day - is that correct?

Waterloo to Reading is about 1 hour 20 and Paddington to Reading is about 30 but is only marginally cheaper. However for you it might be easier to go from Abbey Wood to Waterloo East for the SWT service at Waterloo rather than using the tube to Paddington.

good luck - it doesn't sound a very pleasant journey however you do it. Maybe a B and B in Reading occasionally would break it up.
