Broken New Bike

I bought a new BMX bike for sons birthday 2 weeks ago £260 (not cheap)15/0/08
Last week the chain snaped:mad: .He has only used it on the road and not any BMX track.
I contacted the company and they are stating the chain is not covered under the warrenty. And i will have to buy a new 1.
Surely this cant be correct?

It is really nothing to do with a warranty. You have a legal right for it to be fit for purpose and to be of satisfactory quality.

I must say that any bike shop that palms you off with that excuse over a broken chain isn't one I would use twice.

If they continue to be obstinate I would suggest a call to Consumer Direct

what about the shop you bought it from? is it obvious as to why the chain broke? if it's defective, someone will have to replace it.
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

I bought it online @ Winnstanley Bikes, they have said they will send a replace now goodwill gesture.

At first they said it was not covered, only the bike frame cover for 12 mths.
But imo it should be all of the bike if it is used on a day to day purpose, would fit for purpose come into this if the chain broke again?

is the chain replacement the same? it may have been a cheaper chain. chains do break, in the same way as wheels buckle, tyres burst, etc, but within a few days I would expect my chain to remain intact.

if it breaks after a few months, it will be worth noting it, but I doubt you'll get a replacement unless it broke for a fourth time, by which time it will be pretty obvious someone is doing something wrong!
