External hard drive help

What am I doing wrong....keep it simple please :confused:

I have bought a Maxtor EHD. I've backed up my vista laptop, and I can open the folder up and see what is in back up in folder.
I've backed up my widows XP PC, I have a folder, says time date and size, but I can't open to view it, on laptop or PC.

Any wise words.....

    Its just that. a BACKUP file. You can only use the file if you need to revert back to the state when you backed up the information. You cant use it any other way im afraid.
    If you want to back up AND use the info you must simply COPY the items and PASTE to the new drive. (Right click)

    How exactly are you "backing it up" Do you use a file copy software, an imaging software?

    Not sure how I'm backing up, but I just wanted to check what I had backed up. I can do this, this with laptop back up, I can open file and it shows me what's there, but the PC folder won't open.
