It looks as if you are determined to spend lots of money, in which case maybe this is the wrong forum. If not, then you could do worse than this refurbished IBM/Lenovo Tablet laptop for £349
http://www.tier1online.com/Items/Item.aspx?SKU=x41%20g3/4%20make%20sure%20xp%20tablet&caSKU=x41%20g3/4%20make%20sure%20xp%20tablet&caTitle=IBM%20Lenovo%20Thinkad%20X41%20Tablet%20TINY%20Laptop%20with%20XP%20Tablet%20Edition
Knowing Tier1 you may get just the remnant of the manufacturers warranty though - but Lenovos are fairly bulletproof, I use 3 of them, rock solid.0 -
Wow! I just saw this post and wondered what a 'tablet' is so had a look at the tier site. I never even knew such things existed and now..... I want one!!!!!!!! However, I've got a few questions:
I am returning to study next month... would it be feasible for me to use a tablet to take all my lecture notes on?
I tried googling for more info and several sites talk about 'handwriting recognition'. If anyone can explain what that means (in VERY simple layman's terms) I'd be really grateful.
Is it possible for the computer to convert my handwritten notes to typeface for example?
Can you take notes on a tablet just as quickly as you can write with pen and paper?
Does the handwriting look as neat?

Does anyone have any thoughts on the best tablet to buy please?“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

The tablet I linked to above is a fully featured Windows XP computer and will do everything a big computer will do, only the screen is a 12" one. So you can install Word/Excel or their free Openoffice equivalents and do everything. Plug it onto a big monitor and you have a desktop machine practically.
Handwriting recognition is hardly worth the bother unless you are using a large PDA where you have no keyboard. Perhaps posters to this thread can let us know, what size and price range ae you really looking for?0 -

Thank you so much for your reply and suggestions... to elaborate on my needs/wants...
I am returning to full time study (as a very mature student
) on a masters course and wanted a notebook to take to uni with me. I am very keen to be able to keep up with all the 'bright young things' on my course! The reason I was so impressed with the idea of a tablet was that I could take notes in lectures and seminars and then save them. I have always found filing paper notes very difficult and end up with paper everywhere but for some strange reason find it much easier to be well-organised on computer! Similarly, I thought it would be brilliant if the handwriting recognition software could transcribe my handwritten notes into type. As I have a 'big' birthday coming up my dh has offered to buy me one of these and would be prepared to spend up to about £800 to get me something that will meet all my computing needs for at least the next 3-5 years (I might be going onto do a PhD). However, as I won't be earning this year I am keen to try and be 'sensible'.
I went to look at the HP TX2520ea tablet at the dreaded PC World yesterday... just to get an idea of how tablet PCs work. I really liked it and it is a much higher spec than the one you've suggested above (plus it has a DVD drive which I would like) but they couldn't show me how the handwriting recognition works. I remember when voice recognition first came out and it took me longer to correct the mistakes than it would have done to type two fingers myself in the first place! I don't want to have the same experience with handwriting recognition! The HP was £699 in PC world and I have been searching to see if I could find it any cheaper but no luck so far.
I'm looking to buy something fast (I'm impatient
) reliable, easy to use and with good technical support as I'm still a novice user and don't find these things as easy to pick up as my children do! I've never owned a HP (have always had Dell desktops in the past) and have read very mixed reviews about them so not sure of quality and reliability.
All suggestions gratefully received.“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

I've been looking until I'm goggle-eyed ... can't decide if I would be better to get a cheaper laptop and a separate tablet or an all-in-one. I need the tablet for taking lecture notes and converting my handwriting to typeface. PLEASE can anyone help?“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”
