Free Name A Star

www.FreeNameAStar.com

Haven't seen this one on here, though there was another one but they got rid of their free option on that site. This one is pretty good, I've just done it, you don't get to pick where your star will be if you want it for free, but it's a cute thing you can do for a loved one regardless!

Really great - thanks. I have a birthday and a recently born in the family so have done it for both - it doesn't matter about the free banner showing as most people think that the ones you have to pay large amounts of money for are a con anyway - the lovely thing is having the star named after someone. Someone did one for me once and the sentiment was lovely but they did pay through the nose for it so thanks again.

Has everyone looking at this seen the post (sorry - can't remember posters name) for birthday, anniversory scrolls? - you may want to both for a special occassion - I just have! - thanks.

Hi again - Its Scenesixty poll birthdy/anniversory/whatever

These two posts really compliment each other for birthdays etc.

I know this site is free so there's no harm but paying to name stars is a scam. Only the International Astronomical Union has the authority to name them. If you choose to name stars it will not be recognised by countries, authorities or scientists. See here for more information :)

You can edit out the freestar bit on the banner with the right software and a bit of time on your hands anyway so I haven't worried as I've done it for my OH. Sometimes the sweetest things you can give someone don't have to cost and don't have to be things you can hold. I loved that you not only name the star but you get to put a longer dedication too.

Have to agree about the ones where you pay a fortune being a con, someone once bought me an acre of moon - which was different sure, but seemed like a waste of their money when I found out how much it was!

I've just seen that scroll thing on here, may have to do that for the OH too, his birthday's already been and gone but as he's a bit homesick for the states it might cheer him up!

Indeed it is, that's why I went for the free one, it may not be recognised but it is a lovely thought! I've seen the prices on some of those sites, and scam is putting it politely!

yes, but to be fair, it does make that clear in the website's faq. so i wouldn't describe it as a scam. scientifically meaningless, yes, but a nice bit of fun, for those that want it.

Of course, but I just wanted to make it clear for anyone who might not know :) there are loads of star-naming sites and not all of them are scrupulous about telling the truth.
