i would deffo go broad band, even if you only get the 512k, it doesnt matter how super duper the pc , if you want the internet you need broadband.
the problem would be the same connecion wise with a new lap top unless you continually use battery instead of having it plugged in.
at the moment you have a laptop ( albeit an old one), you say you want a more upto date pc but have £400 ish to play with. a tft monitor take up very little space and a mini tower or midi tower can be placed underneath or ontop of a table, which just leaves keyboard and mouse.
1, 4 way extension cable and a look around this board for the latest broad band prices and a look on dell or some other place and your problem is sorted and you still have your laptop for when you need some laptopping.what is the plural of moose?
