Outlook - troubleshooting "rules"

In outlook 2003 I have set up a rule to move messages with certain text in the subject line into my junkmail folder and to mark them as read.

This worked fine until last week - suddenly the messages are being marked as read but instead of being MOVED to the junk mail folder they are being COPIED to it, with the copies appearing in both my inbox and the junkmail folder. I have checked the rule and it still specifies to move such messages, not to copy them. I have tried deleting the rule and re-creatign it, but to no avail. Any ideas?

Have you got any rules that run after it that may be causing the problem? Ensure you add the "...and stop processing more rules" to the rule, as otherwise Outlook will just go down the list and carry on.

Thanks - I've tried two things:

    - Firstly, based upon your suggestion I moved the rule to the bottom of the list, and checked "stop processing more rules".

    - Secondly, I tried making two separate rules, one to move and the other to mark as read.

However, in both instances it still copied rather than moved.

    Any ideas?

You are definitely just "moving it" not "moving a copy" (there are two distinct options)? No doubt you are, just checking though!

Sounds like a rule gremlin, you could try downloading and running SP-3 for Outlook 2003 from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938802/
  • Thanks - I'l try the service pack
