cheers for the extra info, guys n gals. Looks like it's a scam then. Glad I caught it before sending money anywhere, huh?
lol all advise is offered "as is" and should be taken as such. No blame can be placed on me if it all goes horribly wrong!

They don't even need that. All they need is the MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number), Sender's name (and optionally address) and Recipient's name (No address needed). They make fake passport or ID of the person you transferred it to
They go into local WU and get money (often they have WU people on a kickback as wel).
The cut-off for documentary proof used to be quoted as £500 but recent reports have quoted figures of over £1000 being handed over with just this info and no further checks.0 -
You could really upset them though. Send the money to yourself by WU, and pick it up. Only then send the MTCN etc to the scammers. Be interesting to know their reaction. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

I always thought you had to specify the office from which the withdrawl would take place when you sent the money ??0

lol sounds like anything to do with WU is a simple no-no

Just had a reply missing out all the question i asked regarding the flat that might help establish whether it was genuine or not. However, the "landlord" does say that his solicitor is insisting that it is done through WU. I'm going to ask for the solicitor's details and see what happens but I'm pretty amendment this is a scam now.
Oh well, makes me even more depressed then before. Gotta love house hunting, huh? Anyone got a flat to rent in London? I'm nice, honest!

Where did you see the place advertised? I'd get on to your local trading standards and let them have a look at it too.0

Graycat - it took me about four months to find a place - but in the end I decided it was proper national agents for flats or flatshare.com for rooms...
Yes agents are more expensive and their fees are stupid but there are so many scams around its just safer the first time (you can always ask the LL to do it privately at the end of the first AST).
If its rooms you want I found flatshare good as people have to pay to contact but its free to search and post...every time I found a good room I flagged it and then the LL/current tenants would pay to contact me...had five to ten good viewings this way.
Hope you find something soon! I'm moving in tonight so you get there eventually!0 -
It's definitely a scam. Presumably, though, it only works if the scammers intercept the money before the money is collected by the genuine recipient. Would there be any risk to you if you gave the the relevant info after you your friend has collected the money?
I'm certainly not suggesting that the OP should try this, by the way - you should definitely steer clear of the whole thing - it's just a theoretical question as to whether a WU transfer is "safe" once the money has been collected?0 -
someone on here got done for a grand in exactly that wayIt is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0
