Sticky pine shelves

I'm building a couple of wardrobes and am about to put the shelves in. The shelves are pine, about 9" deep. The problem is, they're really sticky presumably with wood sap. I don't want to paint or varnish them but the OH will do her nut if she finishes up with gum on her undies!
Any ideas how I can get the stuff off and prevent it leaking further?
