I've just bought one of these for NTL Modem set up. NTL Cable >>>>modem>>>>wired link to Router. From Router....wired link back to pc and wireless links to 2 laptops.

I see it's no longer stocked by Amazon - I paid £38 incl delivery.0 -
I have no idea what NTL provides, but Telewest/blueyonder installs a cable modem which has (you hope) an ethernet socket to which you connect your single PC or laptop, using an ethernet patch cable.
If you want to connect a router following the cable modem, you purchase what is usually called a "broadband router" or a "broadband wireless router" - the type you don't want has "ADSL" at the front.

Not necessarily - just nice to have all in one that's all. Bring it on if you know of any good deals on Wireless CABLE routers. Thanks.
I already have myself set up with a high spec Netgear adsl modem/router that I managed to score of Amazon with a free wireless usb adapter for £50 with a code (originally £80 for the two)... just happened to meet a new b/f that has cable... I wanna be able to use my wifi enabled lappy at his place on his connection, and also be able to share files on a network without wires trailing through his place. I know enough about routers etc... just need to know where to get them cheap. lol... thanks again.

It sounds like you could simply use a cheap Wireless Access Point.
Example - Go to this link and enter 42011342 into their search box at the top left. Then click on the "i" for more info. This connects to the modem and acts as a simple wireless access point which should allow you to connect as well.

Ok, so it's around the same price as your average cable router... how does it work differently from a cable router? It can be used for the transfer of files too right? Just double checking before I look into buying one
I had to buy an adsl modem/router at my place coz my speedtouch modem couldnt be used with it. lol, tight. Wanapoo says it all really. lol.0 -
Ah, you have the infamous DG834GT and WG111T Netgear products. Never been pleased with mine very problematic, even for the £53 I paid.
If you already have a Cable modem (with ethernet port) you could try a KCorp KLG-575. I've got one and it's brilliant, compares well with my Draytek (4x the cost). It's a strange situation in that KCorp has discontinued it, and no longer offer technical support, but you'll most likely never need it.
I've had mine since July and not had a single fault, it just works. It won the PC Pro wireless router test back in July. It's difficult to get hold of though, most places are sold out. Amazon had it a week or two back for £36."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

I sure do use the DG834GT, and it's brill... I will miss it when I move in with the b/f - over to cable
... I don't use the WG111T - still boxed as new.
Thanks wolfman... will have a snoop around and play detective
