HBOS student account charges??!

Right.... I have a Bank of Scotland / Halifax student current account. With this account I got a Visa Debit card. This card has been good and useful, as it works in all the places my old Electron card did not. Trying to keep my spending within my means, I turned down the opportunity for an overdraft. However, i recently incurred over 100 quid in bank charges for spending more than I had in the account. This spending was not by direct debits, but by me paying for things in shops etc. I simply assumed that it would not let me spend more than I had, as it was a debit card that I have. Have I been screwed by the bank or was I just stupid to assume that? or both.

You should never rely, as a budgeting measure, on being advised of reaching your credit limit/overdraft limit/nil balance via declined transactions. Sometimes things get let through and sometimes they do not. You may be charged fees even if you attempt to spend on the card and the transactions fails. You should not use the card unless you are certain you have enough available balance to cover it.0
