Double glazing quote

Hi, I have been thinking about double glazing my front bay window (3 windows only). height 180cm and the width is 80 cm for 2 windows and 110cm for the middle window. got 2 quotes for national companies for around £1800-£2000 with the usual better specs you would expect from the bigger companies. am going to get some local companies to quote. felt that around £2k is a lot to pay for 3 windows. hope someone can tell me what price range i can expect for the job. many thanks.

Let me know if you are near Nottingham/Derby as I know a great firm that did the windows in my three previous houses...

Thanks for the reply. Am afraid i am in London. Am awaiting the local firms to quote. Double glazing seems so complicated with a lot of big figures being thrown around.0

My advice would be, ignore the 'original' prices that they quote first which then have massive discounts to reach the 'actual', so called discounted prices they give you. It's all nonsense.
And then don't make any decisions until the end of the month. In my experience they keep ringing you back offering lower and lower prices, and at the end of the month you will get the best deal as they will want to get their numbers up for that month to get maximum commission. In the end, Anglian came round to ours on a Sunday just to get us to sign before month end - and what we finally paid had no resemblance to the original price they quoted.
Good luck!0 -

I would agree thats just not true, bigger companies will give you dodgy salesmen, scam offers, and here today bankrupt tomorrow.
I've used local small companies every time I wanted windows doing, one of them had 3 generations working for the firm, fitters that had worked together for 30 years, £1 deposit!. You get what you pay for at the end of the day, and with the nationals you are mainly paying for the salesman’s commission.0 -
If you have the measurements get the windows made yourself then just hire a fitter, my dad did his house for £100's not £1000's. Even the guy from the manufacturing company came around and checked his measurements (fnar fnar).

Agree with the other posters on this issue. The nationals use exactly the same profiles you find with the locals. If anything, the specs are worse because they have higher costs. You will rarely get a better combination of price, quality and service from the nationals than you would from a good local. Meanwhile you go through all the nonsense "I'll phone the manager" sales patter from them. Avoid the nationals in my opinion.0 -
i work for a small family double glazing firm and have to say, if this is the first time you have got involved in serious DIY do NOT buy or fit the windows youself.
There are so many things that can go wrong with bay windows that they are a pain for proffesional fitters. you need to know if you need bay poles, cupplings, h sections, how the windows are reinforced, if the bay is load bearing and how to support it.
i don't mean to scare you into using whoever has come through your door, i would suggest ask friends and family if they have used any1 and would recommend them then get ideally at least 3 quotes. if no1 can recommend any1 look in books such as trust a trader or local directories. i would say local firms tend to be better as you deal with the same people from the word go.
Once you have your price, ask if you can see any of their work, if they are a good company they will have many happy customers, ask to see sample windows and glass and extrusion samples to make sure you see what you will get.
be aware, if the bay is measured and fitted properly you tend to get slightly less glass than on a normal window because of the number of windows involved and the extra support generally required.
hope this helps.0 -
I am thinking of have all my glazing replaced by a reputable company (ie everest, anglian etc). I live in a standard 3 bedroom house and would be looking to have 8 A-grades energy efficient windows fitted (UPVC-Sash).
Whats a fair price??
Cheers
