I just have ordinary Freeview, so I'd need either to buy a new Freeview box that takes the viewing cards (mine was built in about 1765), but this at least gives you the chance to get one with a built-in HD recorder for under £100 - OR - I could switch to cable e.g. rebundling my Virgin deal from Bt line to cable (tricky!) - OR find a pub that managed to make their prepaid Setanta package work!!

ADVICE ADDED 15TH SEPTEMBER: I bought a Thomson 250GB Freeview Recorder from Argos last week for £100. The card was included, and a year of Setanta plus one month of Top-Up TV cost me just £20 on top. There were of course teething troubles getting it tuned in and getting all the services working, but basically after about 48 hours I had all the channels and everything working properly. Just needs that little bit of patience at the outset.

Be prepared to retune the freeview channels (automatic) a couple of times, and don't be afraid to take the card out and put it back in if the signal disappears when you are watching a match. You can also reboot the whole system by switching off the power then back on and giving it a minute or so before taking it off standby again.

But now it all seems to work fine without any fuss. No phone calls to Setanta, no tearing my hair out.

Mind you, they haven't started overcharging me yet...

I bought the Freeview Wharfedale 160GB box from Argos for £90 + £20 connection that gives you Setanta free until May. If you are looking for the sports until the end of the footy season then the Setanta part pays for the box on its own.

I read some bad reviews of the similar Thomson box being noisy so I think Wharfedale is the one to go for (mine is pretty much silent).

The only negative is the software needed updating which was a bit fiddly (go through various menus and then leave for a couple of hours to download the update) but once that was done it has worked fine. The telephone support people are very hit and miss!

There are more expensive ones with bigger hard drives but if it is just the Setanta you really want then I think this is the one to go for: Wharfedale £110
