Studying in abroad in New York next year

Next January I will be studying and living in New York City for six months. Any tips on bank accounts, student friendly areas to live and general tips to prepare myself would be appreciated.

Thanks

  • What uni are you doing your exchange with?

Have you applied for student accomodation?

My mum does some work there sometimes and I have been there. From what I can see, there is a bank called Chase which my mum uses.

The area where New York University is has loads of students so perhaps that could be somewhere to look at. Columbia University also have halls. I would suggest you stay in halls so you can meet other students.

In regards to money, the best thing to do initially when you arrive is to get travellers cheques whilst you wait to sort out a bank account. Carrying cash is always dangerous.

It's a brilliant city, like London in many ways in how vibrant it is but count your safety as the most important thing and you will have a good time.

  • My OH spent a semester in the States and loved it. His only problem came from the SLC, who messed up his loans and left him without money for a month. So, definitely make sure you've got enough cash for emergencies, and also try to sort out any problems before you leave the UK. Trying to call the SLC from the States can be really expensive, and a pain too with the time difference.
  • I'm going there to study for a month very soon...I'm living in Brooklyn.
