Builders pay

Builders Pay

I hope I am ok asking this on here.

I am in the process of getting a extension built, and the bricklayer agreed £100 per day, he said he would be working 8 till 4
that's 8 hours in my books, but each day he has only done between 4 and 6 1/2 hours and he isn't going that fast, Do you think he will still be expecting the £100 per day. I don't want to ask incase it causes conflict,

I think he would be upset if we changed it to an hourly rate, and I do want the job finishing.

Do I just pay up when he asks, Or should I say something. I hate awkward situations. but Paying him this means my husband has to work 2 hours to pay him for hour.

thanks for any help.

  • did you get an overall quote for the work done? How much is left to do, as if not much work done yet, could you send him packing and get a faster builder in?

I am thinking about getting an extension built, but would really like an overall price quote which included a time shedule, that way, if the builder takes longer than he anticipated, it would be coming out of his pocket, not mine!

You would of been better getting a price for the job rather than day rate. Bricklayers who work for housing companies building houses get paid per thousand bricks laid. My mate works for Morris Homes and get paid £400 per thousand bricks laid.

is your problem that he is only on site for 4 hrs a day in which case he is only working a half day ,or is the problem that he is not physically laying bricks for the full eight hours. If it is the latter are there other factors involved such as material shortages ,inclement weather etc.
You say your husband has to work 2 hours to his 1 to cover the cost what does he do and when he is at work is he working non stop throughout the day.
If you have got a bricky who will work for 100quid a day and you are happy with the job keep hold of him even if you think he is only working for 3/4 of the time he is there

Depending upon what part of the country you're in, £100/day should only get you about 5 hours of your bricklayer's time per day, to be perfectly honest. 8 til 4 would include at least an hour of break time.

£20/hr is about right in my opinion. Might even be cheap in some places.

  • I have paid too many jobbers, to patch up a job. Pay peanuts and get monkeys.

Pay what it costs and get a guarantee.
  • i work in double glazing and work regularly with a couple of builders, generally the best thing is to get a price for the whole job, as day rates can leave you asking questions (like am i getting a full days work?) there are things that will need to be done and quite often away from site, sourcing materials, dealing with planning permission or the building inspector. these sorts of things make it hard to know if you are getting your moneys worth.

ask a couple of other builders to price up the rest of the job, settle whats outstanding with your builder and ask him also to price for the rest of the job.

i was thining of doing what you are on my own extension, paying day rates, but then the emphasis is on you to supply materials answer quieries on plans, dealing with arcitects etc. very involved and your knowledge has to be bang up to date.

Always ask friends and family if they have used or could recommend any1 and always get several quotes. try to use some1 who seems completley honest and upfront. the one problem that crops up in most cases, the customers will change the specs and be surprised when that means the price changes so make sure you have detailed plans and ask any questions you have.

    hope this helps
  • :rotfl: It might have helped but bearing in mind the Op asked the question at the end of 2005 he might be sorted by now!:rotfl:

  • I've been given a second-hand, plastic base, upvc lean to conservatory. I'd like to ask someone to take it down and transport to our house then fit it. A friend said that it might be one and half days' job.

    The conservatory
    dimensions: 3x3x2 (meters).
Anybody can eastemate the cost for doing this job?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, Advise anyone.

I have a brick layer repairing a wall on day rate. He tells me that when I'm payin' him day rate it's down to me to clean up and dispose of all the rubble?? Any thoughts or advice?

    Thanks in anticipation.

If you are paying him on a daily rate then it is obviously going to take him longer if he has to clean up and dispose of the waste - thus costing you more money! If you are only paying him for his time, and didnt discuss the disposal of waste then i'd suggest you negotiate a cost with him for this (he shouldnt be able to just drop it off at the tip free of charge). If however, you are able to do it yourself (if there isnt too much) and want to save a few quid, load up your car and off you go!
