I have a spend diary tho, I started it about three weeks ago now and its going well ... it also reminds me to keep receipts as I am a serial non-returner for things which dont fit/arent right ... due to having to see how much I spend I returned some items to Instore last week for the pricely sum of £1.88 lol.
I wasnt sure about opening another account as I have been with HSBC since forever and ever and its a student a/c with my card to it (the number of times I run out of money and am soo busy, realise I have no milk and have to run over to the shop and have to put it on my card). Also everything goes into that a/c, my wages, LEA money etc...

 Hey again sweetie,
There's nothing to stop you having two accounts and two cards!
We've just opened a new account (via the Quidco site so we earned cashback) for our supermarket shopping as that seems to have got out of hand lately.
Our wages will get paid into the old account as usual, then the amount of money we have allocated for supermarket spending will be transferred into the new account and we'll only spend money with the cards from the new account.
You could move a monthly amount into your new account for spending leaving enough to pay off a little of the overdraft in the old one each month.
It would take discipline but it's how we paid ours off.

PS a spending diary is a fab idea. It gave me a proper kick up the bottom when I saw how much money I "frittered" when I could have been paying off the debt.

thats much better than the way I thought was the only way... any suggestions on which a/c I may be best with? or what features I should look for?

Hi Jen
I'm the last one to talk as I was really bad at spending when I was at Uni but I just wanted to pop in and say hi.
As for bank accounts - have a look at Martin's main website. He's always good for a bit of advice. Then see if you can make some money by joining through the cashback sites.
Also, another idea, if you have allocated your student loan to partcular payments then it might be worth putting that money into a savings account until a day or two before the payment is due. This does require some discipline though!
Final thought, have you paid any tax on your earnings - you may be entitled to claim this back (even for previous years). This saved me loadsa times (I usually claimed it back at Easter so I could focus on exams without worrying about money).
Final final thought! Is the £60 a month for rent right? It seems a bit low to me but I congratulate you on a great deal if it is.

hi Urg and Jacks,
:rotfl::rotfl:choosing bank a/c's, I think I will try a conbined approach and see what has the best advantage overall.....
I seem to spend sometimes just out of boredom or to address a need that isnt strictly a need as when Im too busy I just get around the problem. Days when Im at work all day I can get away with not spending anything at all!!
I dont actually get a student loan, this is a repeat year so I havent applied as I was hoping to work through rather than accumulate yet another £4,000 debt.
I am trying to sort my tax at work at the moment ... I am very careful to make sure I have completed the right tax forms as for one hol job I had what they took off me over the three weeks was more than I got paid for the week! Although I think I'm currently on basic rate, I have spoken to my manager at work and he hasnt got back to me yet.
The rent is £235 a month + internet charges so I just divided it up, I havent actually moved in yet so im worried there may be a catch as everywhere else I looked wanted £300+.

Your a student yet there is nothing in your SOA for entertainment. Is that right?? Personally i was in the union 2-3 times a week when I was a student.
I can help you with tax if you want. your tax code should be 543l on your main job (rising to 603l later this month) and it will be BR on any additional jobs. If your tax code is BR on your main job complete a p46.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000 -
hi,
Yes, belive it or not I dont go out that often ... I can't honestly remember the last time I went out somewhere!! I am repeating my year due to being ill with depression and anxiety, I should get out more as Im sure its not doing me any good really in the long term.
Thanks for the advice re tax. My wage slip is with the majority of my stuff in storage so I will have to wait to have a look.

hi,
I remember something else today!! I got to sewing classes during the school year, they are £15 for three hours + matierals which can become quite expensive as there are so many lovely fabrics.
I have just applied to open an Alliance and Leicester a/c, my sis is with them and she was saying theyre really harsh on the bank charges and they owe her 100's so am feeling a little apprehensive as I have none at all with HSBC.

Hi. I would have a looksee at the Up your Income threads, a lot of people who are into music talk about slice the pie. You could also register with pigsback and survey sites as it all helps.
PS The old style forum is great for cheap meal ideas as well.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0 -
hi,
I already do a lot of whats suggested ... I couldnt get into Slice the Pie - in fact a lot of the tracks were auful and it seemed I was not very good at rating them as I earned very little!!
I am scouring the mystery shopping sites to try and get some shops but I work on a rota so I cant book anything for beyond Wednesday when the new rota comes out ...
I do all the worthwhile surveys too - Most of the surveys for OnePoll arent applicable to me and Global Test Market always seems to screen me out regardless of how much I fib...
Meals lol... ive been eating at work this past few weeks and bring Waste home and eating that ... i made a curry last week and the left overs are what i'm having tonight. Ive also been saving some vouchers I got from PineCone to do some food shopping tomorrow ...
