Can't connect to internet after downloading programmes

I'm having trouble with my Dell Laptop.
When ever I install new programmes the internet connection fails and I can no longer access outlook express or internet explorer. Uninstall the programme and everything is fine.
This only seems to happen after downloading programmes rather than installing from disk.
I had given up downloading but now my Kaspersky has expired (which I bought on disk last year) and I want to install a free anti-virus programme (AVG)
Would be most grateful for any help.
