How can I contact Alliance & Leicester?

I never received a new 8 digit customer ID from A&L. So when I tried logging on today my old 12 digit number no longer worked.
Fair enough, phone the "24-hour" number given on their website - 0844 800 1144. A couple of minutes worth of automated announcements later, it presumably attempts to transfer me elsewhere - and I get an engaged tone! It has been doing this all day. I tried the alternative number given - 0844 800 9000 - and I cannot get anywhere without my 8 digit ID!
I don't have a branch that I can get to during the day. And they don't published any other numbers that I can find. I could write to them, but that would take too long, I need to access my account this week.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Simon

Try 08000 688638 (credit card line), follow the prompts for current accounts, and eventually (if you press enough random digits, #'s, and *'s) you'll fail security.
You'll then be passed to a human, who'll hopefully be able to help you.
If all else fails, at least you're not paying horrendous costs for dialling 0844 numbers.0 -
Sorry about bumping this thread, but this is my exact problem.
Your suggestion about the credit card line doesn't work anymore, so what can I do?
The number for internet banking shows as 0844 800 1144 whether you're a new or existing customer, and it keeps requesting my customer ID which I haven't got yet (I wanted to ask about it) - what can I do???
Nevermind: still using this number I clicked enough #'s, and *'s to get me to an operatorBeing brave is going after your dreams head on0 -
Have you tried hitting * or # a lot when it asks for your 8 digit pin on the 0844 800 1144 number - that usually works.
Or put in a false number as you have no way of passing the security tests (i.e. 12345678) and you'll fail and get passed to a human.
Should work.
pippitypipI know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok - they know me here!0 -
Try their main switchboard? 0116 201 1000 (Number taken from https://www.saynoto0870.com).
Otherwise, I can only echo YorkshireBoy's suggestion above of pressing random keys (e.g. *s, 0s, #s) until you speak to a human.0 -

Thanks for giving out this number - yesterday I rang it, asked for complaints dept, spoke to a human being and have received something through the post today.
It works, in my experience!!!0 -

I talked to the main swithcboard and she said you have to let the "enter you ID" message run 4 times and then you get the option to talk to a human, I am guessing most people phoning an 0844 number will hang up after hearing the message once or twice like I did.0 -
