Hadrians Wall National Trail

Hi,

We're thinking of doing this next June or September. Has anyone walked this already.

Any advice and tips on planning and accommodation would be appreciated.

I haven't been on this trail yet but hope to do a stretch of it on the way from my £10 Travelodge stopover at Scotch Corner.

Just wanted to say, though, that walking breaks are a top moneysaving type of holiday. Pack your sandwiches and flask and a decent pair of boots (try Hawkshead for cheap amateur-grade ones) - and a good walking guide from the library or tourist information and you're away.

We've had some fantastic walking holidays on cheap package deals to places like Majorca, Tenerife and Crete. We take a Sunflower Landscapes walking guide http://www.sunflowerbooks.co.uk/index2.htm (accurate to the last rock, tree and bus stop) and sandwiches, take a local bus, and scarcely spend anything the whole week, while having the luxury of the wildest and most beautiful parts of the islands to ourselves. You don't have to be really fit if you choose the route carefully.

Sorry - a bit off subject but just wanted to share this!

I did the whole walk over a leisurley week a couple of years back as it was opening. It is certainly a very interesting walk. We went from East to West.

The first day you go through industrial landscape, through the city of Newcastle and we stopped at The Keelman in Newburn. This is a converted old water pumping mill which has a pub, a brewery (good food and drink) and some good accommodation.

The next day you are into nice countryside, although close to the A69. We stopped at Corbridge which is a nice village with a few good pubs and restaurants. There are several B&Bs available we stayed at the Riverside which was very nice.

You then go past Hexham, through Chollerford and start going up hills. It is here that you start to see the best part of the wall at Housesteads, etc. Steel Rig is probably the most dramatic bit with big drops the 'other' side of the wall. We came off the wall here and stayed at accommodation in Bardon Mill which is a few miles off the wall. However, there are plenty of B&Bs in this area, a Youth Hostel at Once Brewed and a pub called The Once Brewed which has good accommodation and food. There are more B&Bs springing up as the wall walk becomes more popular.

A few miles off the wall is Haltwhistle, which claims to be the centre of Britain. A nice enough town if not that glamorous. There is a hotel there called the Centre of Britain which is very nice and does good food. The Black Bull pub is also good for real ale and food.

We then went on through Segedunum, Gilsland Walltown. etc. It is still nice and green rolling hills. We stopped at Greenhead and went back to stay at Bardon Mill (we had friends in cars who weren't walking).

It was then on towards Carlisle. The walk flattens out and but is still quite nice. However, you go off countryside and back onto roads through Carlisle. We went through Carlisle, but went back to stay the night there. Carlisle has quite boisterous night life, plenty of pubs, clubs, restaurants, etc.

The last day went from Carlisle to Bowness on Solway. This is nice particularly as you walk alongside the Solway firth. Word of warning, although there are a couple of pubs in Bowness, when we got there at lunch time midweek, they were shut. We had to walk back a couple of miles to find an open one.

The walk is not back breakingly hard, although a bit up and down in the middle. You see a full spectrum of things from the industrial parts of Newcastle, places like Byker (yes Byker Grove) which isn't that pretty, to beautiful countryside in Heddon on the Wall and around Housesteads. There is plenty of B&B accommodation around, although I would advise you book as early as possible as the best places fill up. I would definitely recommend it, the people are friendly and the countryside is as beautiful as the Lake District but nowhere near as busy. We used "Hadrian's Wall vol 1 The Wall Walk" by Mark Richards as the basis for our walk. It contains a lot of useful information, diagrams, etc.

Thanks for the information so far, especially nlpnlp's info, pleased to hear the drops are the other side of the Wall at Steel Rigs, not too good on heights!!

Unfortunately we won't have 'non-walking friends' to give us lifts to start points etc.. It would be a lot easier.

Anyway, actions so far are I've requested the YHA to send me their Hadrian's Wall leaflet https://www.yha.org.uk

Also followed the link on freebies section of MSE by M.E.2. to the National Trails website to download and print their leaflet too http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/publications.asp?PageId=5

Hoping to do this as cheaply as possible. We will probably go up in a car, so could take camping kit, the other alternatives are Hostels/b&b/hotels.

So any info on public transport to get back to car/accomodation, and prices and other recommendations would be appreciated.

Edit - group is 2 adults.
