Building Over Main Electrical Supply Cables

The electric cables supplying houses in my street run accross the back of the properties at high level
We are having an extension built for my daughter and the architect as told the builders who are tendering for the work that they can build the extension roof across the cables, sealing them within the new structure
The first builder who came out told me this wasn't possible as the cables belong to YEDL until they enter my property and that I had to ensure they had clear access to them at all times so they would have to be diverted
The second builder said the exact opposite
When I look around the estate there seems to be a mix of building across and diverting cables so who is right
The work is being grant funded and I am worried that if things aren't built correctly we maybe stung for a big bill in years to come should YEDL need to replace or repair the cables and have to remove the roof section to do so
Heres hoping someone can help as the tender deadline is Tuesday

I have never seen cables overhead that are not acessible
I would suggest you contact YEDL and ask their WRITTEN opinion. That way the buck is passed to them.
You are requiring a builder to work around live cables (possibly 415V if there are more than 3 wires) , which is a NO-NO.
Remeber if they damage the cables (working under your authority) you or they caould have a large bill, as any repairs will have to be to the current standards.baldly going on...0
