Saving to emigrate

Hi there

I am hopefully going to move to Australia at the latter part of 2009- start off thinking about a year and then, if it suits, more long term. I'm going on my own (26yro female) and I dont know anyone there really that can help.

Has anyone on here done this or can offer any advice on levels of funds required to aim for?- Im not talking about funds required for visa requirements, more like setting yourself up/renting etc. And perhaps advice on bank accounts, perhaps buying australia currency before going as its a pretty good rate at the moment for us and any other bits and pieces that would really help me move in the smoothest, comfortable manner.

I am hoping to come up with a figure that I can aim for to take with me. Idealy having a job to go to would be great too. Advice on this area would be great if anyone knows any recruitment companies.

(I've just ordered a book on this stuff, but I am interested in peoples point of view and experience).

Any help you can offer would be tip top!:D

  • Hi Wanno,
How exciting! I'm from Australia and moved over here:) If you want to know anything about Sydney I might be able to help!
Not sure of exact figures off the top of my head but you'll need money for
    a) rent - deposit of at least 4 weeks plus 1st month's rent
    b) setting up house costs - share house? furnished? unfurnished?
    c) shipping costs if you're taking all your stuff with you
    d) enough money to live on for a month or so (esp if you don't have a job when you arrive)
    e) probably hostel or something for the first few days
    f) transport
    g) big food shop when you arrive:rolleyes:

I'd say just imagine you're moving cities in the UK - new job, new house etc and then add more for shipping and for emergencies.

For jobs in Sydney, look in the Sydney Morning Herald - they also have stuff for round the country as well. Depends what kind of work you're looking for, really. I'd also have a look at the Australian embassy site, as they have lots of info for people moving out there.

    Good luck!
