DVD-R discs, speed?

what does the speed mean, ive seen some are 8x, some 16x and some 48x. ive no idea whats what and what i need to record a holiday video onto for playback on a dvd player?

you cant get 48 DVDS though, they must have been cds.
If you get 2 speed dvds and you have a 16 speed writer you can (usually) only write at 2 speed
But if you have 16 speed dvds then you can write at 16 speed
Just to confuse matters though sometimes you need to slow the writing procedure down to work on certain media!:idea:0
