2 Way Switch Help!

We moved into a property with a double gang switch at the bottom of the stairs and a stair light upstairs.

Since we can only turn the stairwell light on from upstairs, I decided to have a play. Now the double switch downstairs has one dead switch so after taking the cover off i spotted a cable (yell, blue, red) unconnected. Upstairs behind the single switch is the other end of the cable, again unconnected.

I wired up the system a fair few times and got it to work, however, I can switch the light on upstairs and switch it off downstairs and vuce versa, but I cannot switch it on from the other switch,

came home tonight and switched the light on and it blew the system, I reset the box and it seems to be working again, albeit not as it should.
Any ideas?
