monitor advice please?

in Techie Stuff
not sure if this is the right place to ask but I need a bit of advice on a new monitor please
all I know is i want a reliable flat one approx 17" - 19"
but there are sooooooooooooooo many please can someone tell me where to start looking?
A friend gave me the one I am using and I am having problems with it its an IBM and if I leave the pc for too long the monitor switches off and it takes a lot of fiddling about to get it running again.
