Suggestions on best way to sell a car

Dearest moneysavers

1) I have in my possession a decent car to sell- what is the best way to sell- hassle wise, cost wise, safety wise..any suggestions would be welcome, especially if you've sold your car this way. I have never sold a car before.

2) Other thing is, i'm thinking of auction- what do people think? pros, cons.

It does depend on what car it is to an extent, for instance if it’s a specialist car which is a bit unusual then there are publications such as top marques which do a good job for that. If you have a Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot, VW, Audi, BMW etc then we would suggest Autotrader they are by far and away the biggest will advertise in their magazine as well as on line and have millions of subscribers, even major car dealers use them. If you have a car that is under 3 years old and up to 50k you could get in touch with your local dealer who stocks your model of car, they will if they buy give you a cheque or tt the money into your account and it’s a hassle free way of selling i.e. (no one coming to your house dodgy bankers drafts etc, and no messers) however they will be buying your car to make a profit so you will not achieve the best price. The other medium which is fast growing and lots of fun is e-bay the fees are reasonable and you are appealing to a worldwide audience the payments are protected through pay pal and you can watch the progress of your car through an on line auction. I would suggest that you do not use an auction as the fees are very expensive and you are not guaranteed to sell and the price you achieve will not necessarily be that much better than selling to a dealer (most auctions are heavily represented by trade buyers looking to sell on for a profit) Hope this helps and good luck

that's really useful in5ider...to say the truth i have been thinking of an auction just because i want to sell asap but you've made me rethink. you wouldn't be interested, would you- just looking at your signature :S

We've sold our old cars privately by advertising in Autotrader, it cost very little to do this. They were both around £5000-£6000 and we felt that we got a really good price for each one. I was pretty nervous about it but actually both went really well.
I think the first one was only advertised for a week, we had one enquiry and she and her partner came to have a look, my husband drove the car for them to see how it ran and they were happy with that. They paid a deposit by cheque and once that had cleared gave us a bankers draft on collection, I quickly phoned the bank to check that before handing the car over.
The second was advertised for maybe three weeks, we'd probably overpriced it initially, it was also just before Christmas so maybe people weren't thinking of buying cars then. We had an enquiry that never came to anything and then a viewer who bought it. Again no problems with payment or anything (it turned out to be someone buying the car for his daughter, the daughter being one of our childs nursery teachers so we felt quite safe with that one).

Thanks for the offer but we are an information and advice service, we don’t buy and sell cars but, in the future we may start a service which would offer preferred dealers for both buying and selling; however they would need to meet very strict criteria before being nominated. Good luck with your sale
