Friends in Cambridge

I don't think I can say this without seeming really sad, but ... I need some friends! I moved to Cambridge almost 3 years ago with my husband and have been really isolated ever since. I've just been sat watching a girly film and thinking I need other girls to appreciate it with (the cat just doesn't quite cut it somehow) :D

So... I'd be thrilled to meet some other people, girls or guys, looking for nothing more than friendship. Living here we have a tight budget so I can't afford to go out much but for nights in or the odd trip to the pub, I'd be thrilled. I'm quite shy, so find it hard to make new friends, if one of those gregarious types fancies taking me under their wing it would be great...

I know its not exactly moneysaving but I recall seeing friendshiop threads on here before and if there is anyone around I'd love to get a life outside my flat.:o

    Hiya

I don't live anywhere near Cambridge unfortunately otherwise I'd be your pal :D Have you considered joining any groups or clubs in the area or maybe doing a bit of volunteer work as that may be a good way to meet new people?

Are you into sports? The Kelsey Kerridge sports centre might be worth a visit:

From memory, Cambridge is the kind of place with a million and one clubs and societies to get involved in. This might be a good website to start looking:

    The message board looks interesting.
    Been away for a while.

we moved somewhere new 3 years ago and i only made friends here within the last 18 months. It's only because i had a baby and went to mother and baby groups, I'm really shy normally but i really forced myself to go out and visit.
Are there any clubs you could go to? sports? slimming? (only said this as i made some friends when i went to a climming group, not aiming to offend)
Good luck, it's horrible not knowing anyone in a new town, I know exactly how you feel.

http://www.hhh.org.uk/ Sociable, and keeps you healthy. Have a look round the site what it's about and type Cambridge in the search box to find your local one.
I hope you find what you need, we all need friends around us, especially if we are far away from our families. xxx

I don't live near you but just wanted to say, I sooooo know where you are coming from. I moved to be with my OH 5 years ago (250 miles away) and I have no friends here
I'm a real betty-no-mates. I have worked up here, was temping for a long time so no chance to make friends, then was working where everyone was about 30 years younger than me! I have sorta given up now, I just enjoy my online friends.

My daughter has just moved to a new town and is finding it difficult too, although she is better off as she has a new baby and is going to baby groups. DD is now concerned for me lol keeps telling me to go to evening classes etc so I can meet people, it doesn't help that my OH works away all week.

am ok most of the time, just sometimes I want to go out and meet up with a mate for coffee, want to do the girlie thing.

Wishing you all the best at finding some friends where you are xxx

I look into clubs, but I'm too scared to go :( I've never been good at the whole making friends thing, and with no school or suchlike to put me in contact with people I've just got more and more isolated. I managed at uni cause I could tell myself that we were all new and no-one knew anyone so it was OK to just talk to anybody, but going into a group where people already know each other and I will just hide in a corner and clam up. I get on fine with the people I work with but its just a small office. I kind of wish I had kids as they would be a great way to get to know people but we aren't in a position for that at the moment.

It doesn't help that my husband has friends (who I don't get one with) so for one thing he goes out and leaves me feeling even more lonely, and for the other he doesn't have the same problem, so he doesn't want to come out with me. A while ago there was a barbeque held for local residents and I really intended to go (knowing he wouldn't come) but when it came down to it I was too scared and stayed home.

I'm too shy even to post much (I read these forms for probably 2-3+ hours every day, but in over two years haven't even made 200 posts). Embarrasingly, I only got up the nerve to post this one cause I was a wee bit tipsy :o

That we are all neighbours site looks really good though, and I will keep an eye on it and maybe I can get my nerve up enough one day, if I am feeling brave. :D

Dazi, I live North Staffs too
I moved up here in 2000 and still hardly know anyone at all. Just go to work, come home, and that's my day, my life really.

Have you thought of doing some sort of voluntary work. It's a great way of meeting people.

I know so well, where you all come from... I have moved here 3 months ago after quitting the job I loved to move again with my husband (he changed the job last autumn and was working here during the week and coming home for the weekends...) I didn't have many friends in the previous place, but I had some, and I loved my job an colleagues.

Here I don't know anyone. I don't like the job. Nor the colleagues (doesn't help when they work from home most of the time - saw my boss 5 times in 3 months!!!!). I am very shy - I just can't come to someone and start talking about nothing. I can't talk about nothing!!!! I am very 'yes' or 'no' and I just don't know how to chit-chat!!!! Don't really like sports, so that is off. If I do something I want to be good at it and I just hate it when I can't do things well (very competitive...)

We have no children yet, so all baby-toddler groups are off. We have been trying for a year now, but no luck so far...

Sorry, to jump in - but every post so far rings a familiar bell. I think my husband is getting fed up - I have no one else to talk with!!!!!!

I was actually thinking to join WI, but I am afraid to go to the group of people where everyone knows each other. Besides, I am 28, foreigner, and I am afraid not to be accepted to the group...

I don't have friends because I left school early to go to work, and have worked ever since in a pretty much all male factory. I don't work in the office so don't get to know the other girls. The rest of the people in my department are men.

Since I started martial arts classes there are other people there I interact with, it teaches me something new, is great for my self confidence, and even though I'm overweight I can still do the classes.:j
