Lost birth certificate

Last week I applied for my baby's first passport. I used the Post Office's check and post service. However, today I received a letter from the passport office saying that the birth certificate is missing.
I know that I definitely gave it to the guy at the post office who served me. His job was to check that all the documents were enclosed. He accepted the application and said everything was fine.
How can I find the missing document? I am worried that it may be in the wrong hands and someone else can use it to apply for loans/bank accounts/passports etc in the future. I want to prevent this for my little boy. What can I do?

I don't think it's anything worth worrying about. Anyone can order any birth certificate from the GRO so they are rarely taken as an identification source on their own.
It's annoying that it was lost, though, as you will now have to order another one.0 -
Check with the post office just in case it fell out, you know it was there as he would of said something if it wasntLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0
