Radiator Pipes

I'm trying to find way of hiding the radiator pipes, I saw some plastic box with a wood pattern effect which might be good.

But I've wondered - weather to makea sort of 'feature' of them, using those old fashioned type brass pipe brackets.

My question is, can the copper pipes be cleaned and varnished to prevent them from tarnishing?
and if so, for how long would the varnish last? (as I imagine, its quite a 'harsh' enviroment for the varnish - very hot then cold then hot).

Depends as ever on the varnish. Polyurethane seems to survive on the pipe but is not effective in the long run at preventing oxidation.
