Always have been!!!
"Alitalia has lost money for years due to labour problems and government and political interference with the attempts to solve them. It has reported only one year of a profit (1998) since its foundation in 1946. Alitalia has reported net losses of more than €3.7 billion between 1999 and 2008."

Oh God, this will be prime material for that moron at Ryanair to come out in the press and on his own airline's website slagging off the Italian Government for subsidising Alitalia.
I'm no mystic Meg, but give it a couple of days and i guarantee the publicity seeking !!!!!! will be making noises.0 -
Yes another airline i am due to fly on in the next week or so.. although what i read at the moment it sounds as it will be taken over or will survive one way or another.. heres hoping that it does for at least another 3 weeks!!!:hello: Lets all save a £ or two, lets all earn a £ or two, and lets all enjoy spending that £ or two wisely.

Looking at their website they have a 'special offer' to Milan FROM £153 return.
Bargain, i don't think.
No wonder they lose money. There must be many airlines who fly to Milan cheaper than that.0 -

Although it's possible the current problem is because the KLM/Air France take-over package can't get sorted.
Apparently, Alitalia used to fly their staff to work around Italy because they all had to live in Rome!!! Try and un-pick that from the contracts of employment!!!0 -

Don't worry - there is no way the Italian Govt will let Alitalia collapse. B****r the EU rules !0 -
Alitalia has been having problems for ages, the Itailian government have been trying to sell their stake in it for ages. They have had talks with a couple of airlines but the unions wouldn't agree to the cuts that the prospective buyers proposed so the deal fell through:j Debt free since 31/01/08:j
