Company taking £50 for something that costs £40

I ordered something on the internet for £39.99 the other day, but noticed on checking my bank today that the company I ordered from actually took £49.98 out of the account. On ringing the company's helpline, I was told this is because the £10 voucher code I used on the order wasn't applied correctly (by their staff) and they would sort it out. However, due to the (small) £10 difference and it being the end of the month (pay day tomorrow!) I went £3 over my overdraft limit and alliance & leicester have charged me a £25 payment review fee..

Hind sight would say I should have ordered it after payday, but seeing as the company have admitted their mistake do you think I have any come back with the company?

Any advice appreciated

  • i dont you should have ordered it after payday, you had the funds available for the cost of the order. as its their mistake i would send a copy of the letter about the charge, a partial copy of bank statement, black out other transactions and account number just leaving your name, the transaction and the negative balance caused by this transaction. covering letter explaining that due to their mistake...........

you shouldnt have to pay for their mistake.

(is it one of the shop direct group catalogues?, they just did the same to me re £10 voucher code, email invoice showed the code coming off but charged full amount:confused: )

    good luck

I would suggest you raise a dispute with A&L.

Advise them that the merchant has charged more than you authorised & request they chargeback the amount. They should also refund any fees etc.

It was for something called a Slingbox - a thing that allows you to watch tv over the internet.

I received an email from the company advertising a special offer between 10am and 3pm last Sunday where you could get one for £49.99 rather than £59.99 (its usual price) excluding delivery. At the same time I remembered I had a voucher to use for the same company worth £10 off anything above £30, so I placed an order online for collection (as the company is based in Manchester and I live nearby) and enterred the voucher code in the box just before payment to take the price to £39.99 all in inclusive of vat. To be honest £50 was still a good deal, but the system accepted the voucher code without a hitch. 30 mins later I received a few emails about the order being ready collection and an invoice with the total owed shown as £39.99 that would be debited from my account.

I called them up and was told by a member of customer services that I had been charged £49.99 because vouchers/discount codes couldn't be used with special offers. I double-checked the email about the offer and sure enough I found a statement saying that the £49.99 deal couldn't be combined with any other offer/discounts. The person on the line offered to refund me £10 (i.e. honour the voucher anyway) which wasn't bad considering I'd not read the t&cs properly. But as I explained the problem is not that the company failed to honour the voucher, it's that I was invoiced for £39.99 but they debited £49.99 which I did not authorise or agree to.

In the end I asked them for a refund and said I would contact my bank for advice, because I felt that it was wrong of them to take more than the invoiced amount without prior contact with myself.
  • Contact your bank and do a chargeback. You authorised £40, they took £50. That's naughty.
  • Lol

Spoke to A&L this morning. The first thing they asked me is whether I'd spoken to the company I'd bought the goods from. After I explained I'd got a refund from the company but they were unwilling to compensate my for unauthorised overdraft fees, the A&L rep said she would try to get the payment review fee reversed at their end. I said that was nice, but surely companies can't take more out of your account than they say they will.... the answer I got.... I gave the company my bank details and I basically have to trust them to take the right amount out!!

All of a sudden the cahoot webcard seems fantastic. I'll use that from now on
