Setting up IMAP on iPhone (NOT gmail)

Options
Could anyone kindly set me on the right path?

Incoming mail works fine, but no two sources seem to agree which smtp we should input.

The O2 shop don't really want to know, and unhelpfully suggested using out existing ISP's server.
Obviously that didn't work or I wouldn't be here. :-)
All searches seem to bring up stuff about gmail... which doesn't help.

We have company email addresses on the company domain, and in the office we use the smtp for the ISP appropriate to that location. The outgoing server doesn't require a password and AFAIK such a password does not exist.

TIA.... :)

Generally the SMTP server you need to use is the one associated with your Internet connection, so that would be your ISP at home, and O2 on your mobile. The SMTP server I use on my phone is smtp.o2.co.uk (port 25).

    Hope this helps...

Its O2 policy that all outgoing mail should go through their SMTP server. This does not affect who it appears to come from, it can still 'come' from a different account, but you need to use the O2 settings including your O2 username and password. Have a look at the Apple support document: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306986

Obviously you can use other outgoing servers when on a wi-fi connection, but for convenience the O2 settings will usually work on wi-fi also (unless your wi-fi provider blocks it)

    Hope this helps... :-)

Thanks guys, the 02 server is the one I would understand it to be as well, (despite 02 shop insisting on us using our LAN smtp) but I didn't have any joy with it without user settings.

Do you automatically get 02 user settings or have to ask for them?

I can't remember where I got the settings from. I think O2 should be able to send them to you, but a quick web search suggests that these might be worth a go:

    Username: faster
    Password: password

    OR

Username: username@o2.co.uk (where username is your O2 website username)
Password: (whatever your online password is)

Your user name and password will be the same ones you use to log in to your online billing. The username should have been given to you when you set up your contract and the password should have been texted to you when you first activated your phone.

    use o2's smtp server?

but what if i'm on a wifi connection, which isn't an o2 broadband connection (and anyway, o2 broadband block port 25 and have to use port 26)

i use wifi in the office (bt) and at home (sky), so wouldn't their smtp server block the connection as it is an unknown IP..

just my thoughts.. my hosting i use, gives me an incoming and outgoing mail server, so i use that within my iphones..

  • As I said before, you can use different smtp server settings while on a wi-fi connection, I just suggested using the o2 smtp settings as these are the only ones guaranteed to work while on a 3g connection (though some others do seem to work, they are not officially supported by o2). It is possible to have multiple smtp servers set up, so you can use different ones according to your connection type, but this is largely unecessary as most broadband providers allow you to use whatever smtp server you want (with a few notable exceptions). As I said before, using the o2 settings doesnt affect who the email appears to come from and you should still use the incoming server settings from your email (or in your case markymoo, hosting) provider.

    Hope this clarifies things

P.S. As for the IP address thing, smtp servers generally 'authenticate' connections based upon username and password not IP address. I presume your concern was that your broadband provider could block you using the o2 settings, but in my experience both bt and sky are pretty good about allowing you to use other email providers.
  • Not because of my iPhone but to help when roaming about I use http://www.dyndns.com/services/mailhop/outbound.html

It is a paid service but cheap - about £7-8 a year.

This means my macbook and iphone use a smtp service that doesn't get blocked. I got frustrated with using a wifi hotspot and my ISPs smtp server was getting blocked.

If you do not manage to get this sorted with o2's smtp server then the link above should help.

I'm nothing to do with the company in question, just a happy customer.
