Just gave away my Panasonic FZ18, to my son, as it was too big to carry around. Now looking at TZ5 small enough for my pockets as some are too small and buttons too fiddly. I like the 3" LCD, wide angle lens and reviews but would be good to hear from real people who may have one?

Not sure if this is of help or not but I have a Panasonic TZ3, the predecessor to the TZ5. It's an excellent camera, the screen is indeed very good, clear and easy to see. You can increase the brightness of the LCD too in bright conditions or to hold the camera higher to take pictures eg. above a crowd.
It's a little big to fit into a normal pocket but certainly portable enough to take around with you. The 10x optical zoom and image stabilisation have come in very handy too, and allowed me to get shots I wouldn't normally have gotten.
The picture quality is very good, though the TZ3 does seem to be a bit too aggressive with noise reduction to the point you can lose some fine detail, and using the camera in ISO settings higher than 200 or 400 can mean some lost detail. However I think they've fixed this in the TZ5.
Hope that helps a bit!Total debt as at Jul 2012: Too much!0 -
I bought the TZ5 several months ago and I would like to say I'm very pleased with it. Fantastic photos taken by a very average snapper. The only problem I have is that I have had very little chance to use it. Both my DGTR and Son have it all the time! They both think it the best camera ever we have had. The video on it is superb!!0

The characteristics of the TZ5 are similar to my, recently given away, FZ18. When I bought the FZ18 my 2nd choice was the TZ3 but the deciding factor was I thought a viewfinder was essential but not so much now. I would like one but can't have everyting. Also seen the TZ5 LCD in bright conditions and better than I throught it would be.A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build.
