ASDA Hovis Bread Mixes

For ages ASDA were selling Hovis Granary Bread mix at 75p a bag. Then one day I noticed the shelves were bare, the reason, a special offer 2 for £1.00. Every day I went back there were none left, everyone and his dog must be buying the stuff I thought. What a great offer! Finally my time came and I cleared the shelves until my cupboard was bulging and the shelves sagged under the weight.
Now I was always taught that all good things come to an end, in ASDA's case though this isn't the case. When the offer inevitably ended the price reverted to 41p each. What?
I complained vigorously that they should at least have put it back to 75p for a few days not to insult everyone by actually reducing the normal price to that lower than the special offer. No response at ASDA Llandudno so I tried ASDA Head Office.
Oops the lady assured me, the price should have reverted to 75p, certainly not have gone down. Their computer apparently confirmed the price was sheduled to remain at 75p a pop for the remainder of 2008. She thanked me and said she would send me a voucher to use in store. I left a contented man, resisting the temptation to go and clear the shelves once more!
Imagine my surprise when I passed the next week, the price had changed, not as assured to 75p, no, now it was 37p. Ahem, I did buy a few!
Again ASDA Head Office assured me it was another mistake and they would change it within 48 hours, oh and yes the previously promised voucher would be sent.
This week the price did change again, now it is 31p and described as a Roll-Back. When I mentioned this to ASDA head office again they told me there was a problem with their computer and they couldn't communicate the 75p price to Llandudno. She said it would change but couldn't say when. I pointed out that their computer didn't seem to stutter when it sent the 31p price nor did it seem to cough when it sent the information to print the shelf edge label. She replied rather plaintifully "is there anything else I can do for you today?"
I declined her offer politely.
Now I am confident, given the lies I have received lately, if you go down to the woods today and visit your local ASDA you too will find the computer has failed to communicate there too!
I would love to know.

ASDA have been selling these bread mixes for around 31p for a while now, at least the white mix - granary a little more, and so has Tesco. My local Tesco shelves are empty now, so will have to pay ASDA another visit. Why query the price with head office - if they want to sell it at that price, just accept it!0

Both these (granary and white) have been this price for a long time, as Moufflon says. There is a post here from 10th July and a thread here from the 22nd July, both referring to Asda. I've been buying this in Tesco whenever I see it for a while now. I may never have to buy a loaf again with the amount I've got, but it's lovely fresh from the BM
I've got agree with Moufflon - why query it? Prices changes all the time, but why are you cross they won't put the price UP to 75pence? Many a time I've been into a supermarket and bought something on offer and then the next week it's reduced further, although at the moment prices for almost everything are rising, don't moan because one is decreasing

Just had another look, the price today is 27p in ASDA Llandudno.
I wasn't necessarily queerying why the price was so low. We all like low prices.
I was however complaining that I, and I suspect many others too, were duped into thinking that 2 for £1.00 was a special offer when 3 weeks later it is nearer to 4 for £1.00.
My complaint was as much about ASDA Customer Service as it was about the price.
Also spoke to the Assistant Manager today, he said this instance had been discussed at a managerial level in store. Strangely contradicting HomeSpun's comments, he also told me that in 25 years supermarket retailing, he had never heard of a special offer price being subsequently superceded by a lower price than before.
If they have got themselves into a price war with other supermarkets then why not just say so rather than lying about isolated computer problems?0 -

I used to live in a tiny town and the only supermarket there was a Somerfield. Their prices yo-yo'd so much I tend not to notice these things. I remember Cola would be around £1.10 for a 2 litre bottle until it was BOGOF and then it would be around £1.35 for the same 2 litre bottle. A couple of days after the offer had ended, the price would go back to £1.10.
I get all my shopping delivered by Tesco now (non-driver) and I notice all the price changes week to week and even from prices the day I order (generally a Thursday for delivery Friday morning) to the delivery note prices.
Normally, also, when prices drop this low for this long on items, it's generally because either the item is being discontinued or re-packaged/rebranded. I had assumed this was the case with this, although the price seems to have stabilised, whereas when items are withdrawn prior to reintroduction they tend to keep dropping until they reach pennies.Islandcongo wrote: »Saddened that you didn't also see that my complaint was as much about ASDA Customer Service too.
Awww, don't be sad. Prior to the 'back of beyond/village that time forgot' Lincs village we live in now, we lived in a larger town in the SW. Asda did deliver there (unlike here, despite there being a 24 hour Asda 8 or so miles away ) and I had many many run-ins with Asda customer 'service'. They had no idea what they were doing most of the time, so I know where you're coming from!

There doesn't seem to be much of a price 'war' going on at the moment, it's more of a price 'fumble'. Bring back the '9pence a loaf' price war I say :rotfl:"I married beneath me, all women do." - Nancy Astor 1879-1964

Maybe their computer was programmed by bread heads?
In any case this is great stuff and at around 30p a pop you can't go wrong.0 -

you were clearly happy buying it at 2 for £1, why then complain when it gets cheaper? especially since everything else is going uphelpful tips
it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
their - 'owned by them'
they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)0 -
None on the shelves locally (or in Tesco who had the same low prices on Hovis bread mix- or did until the new, repackaged replacement came in at around £1!)
However, it's still showing online and as Asda have "replacement product for the same price," policy it'd be worth adding to your online shop.Worse things will have happened in the world today..."The only thing that really matters, it to love and to be loved."0 -
