A few months ago my Dad (whos in his 70s and lives alone) had a letter from British Gas telling him they were sorry he was leaving.
He phoned them, and they said they could re-sign him up but there would be a 3-4 week delay when he'd be with his new company. My Dad knows nothing about any new company.
He did say that someone had knocked his door trying to get him to sign up for gas but he definitely didnt sign up (although he cant remember the name of the company). At first, I thought they'd scammed hi, forged his signature or something so I was waiting for him to recieve a welcome letter from this new cmpany and then I was going to give them both barrels.
However, no letter from any new company ever arrived.
I wrote to British Gas on his behalf explaining the situation. They just said he'd now been re-setup with BG but that between 2 dates (About 2-3 weeks) he'd left and gone with someone else.
Hes since had a bill from BG, and they definitely arent charging him for these weeks. Also, nothing from anyone else, so esssentially, hes been with no-one for these few weeks and not paid anything!
I'm beginning to think its all just a !!!! up by Britihs Gas. I'm certainly not going to argue with them if they want to do this. I wrote to them once and they obivously could not be bothered.
Anybody else ever seen this sort of thing?

Yes, had one of these letters, also stating £600 in credit. No cheque arrived though!
In my case it is all to do with 2 meters, one meter being changed. They recorded wrong details. They only had one meter registered(when you phone mpan people) but have been billing for both. I repeatedly tell them correct info - been ongoing for a couple years. seems they never listen and also don't seem to be able to pass problem to someone who can 'own' the problem until properly sorted.
Now this letter - I'm going to wait until the next quarter to see what if any bill arrives, and write to complaints dept.
I had complained I had no online access and they said the only way they could remedy this was to close account and set up new one and to contact if I wanted this done. Didn't bother as I didn't want to introduce more problems. So waiting to see if this is maybe what they have done.0 -

Nothing complicated like different meters with my Dad. They just for some reason have deciced he left them for a few weeks and now hes back !!!
So, basically, no-ones charging him for those few weeks. Wonder what would have happened if he hadn't rung them - he might be still not paying !!!
I would have been tempted to hold on to the cash and see how long it took them to notice. Trouble is my Dad gets a bit stressed about things like that which is why they've annoyed me so mucgh.0 -

Ditto - it's my parents account I'm referring to. Had a similar problem before - it took BG 4 years to notice !0
