Student gym/Health Club offers

Hi

Does anyone know any decent offers the likes of David Lloyd et al have for students?

It's usually the time of year gyms start advertising for new members and when i wasn't a student i remember they had a "student rate" but not sure how much it was.

Though not sure why i want to go to a David Lloyd place, every time i visit/enquire it seems like they are doing me a favour, raher than offering decent customer service.

Thanks

I used to work for one of the large gym companies. As as a student I would recommend joining a college/uni gym.
Many of the big gyms have student offers. If they normally charge full paying members £45 a month you can expect the student rate to be £25-30 a month. Over a year that is £360 - my student membership to a local sports club gym cost £90 for the year! Fair enough my local sports club hasn't got a treadmill with a tv built into it, but it has plenty of equipment and a great atmosphere. Student gyms vary in price but are a lot less than £360. And by supporting your student gym a lot of the money earnt goies back to the sports network, helping improve facilites etc.
Large gym companies put an enormous amount of effort into attracting new customers, and obviously see students who have just had their student loan debited into their account as £££££. They are likely to hit you with a joining fee as well - prob £20-50 and will try and tie you down to a 12 month contract. If you encounter a gym that charges a joining fee ask them what else the club offers besides the gym (i.e. social nights, internet cafe). Work out whether that fee is reasonable. The problem being many of these gyms out so much effort into attracting you they forget to look after you once you've joined.
Sorry to waffle on but I hope this helps someone!
  • Hi my university gym is really expensive - I think most gyms do concessions - it's usually even cheeper if you go off peak (generally 9am-4:00pm ish and weekends). I currently pay £16.20 per month with Aquaterra
  • Our uni gym is £90 for the year.

Ask at your student union to see if they are linked to any gyms locally.
  • our gym is £15-20 per month and i dont live by the place that i study. I will have to have a word with the student union - though getting a "proper" NUS card is now £10! which is just ridiculous considering a couple of years ago it was a couple of quid.

Maybe speak to the union in my "home" city and see if there's any affiliates. Off-peak could be an option, but whenevr i have enquied about rates before - off-peak to them means "not including weekends".
  • Hi, Cannons gave me a half price membership last year. for both me and my kid it was £50 per month peak time. It would have been cheaper if off peak. included all facs.

I think holmes place offer discounts and La fitness, good luck :j

My uni gym is £110 peak time, but then it is a £10 million facility, has a 25m pool, climbing room, bouldering room, two gyms, a sports hall that you get free use of, cafe and three exercise studios.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.
