We have a portable tv that is about 10 years old which has worked perfectly until yesterday. Now we have sound but no picture - does this mean the tube has gone?

What sort of connection are you running into it? My old TV had this problem and it was the scart cable connection in the back.0

It just has the power lead and arial cable - it is very much a spare tv and only used when we have guests0

Is the set correctly tuned in to receive stations? Try re-running the setup/installation routine, if you can still lay your hands on the manual.
If the tuning is slightly askew, it might indeed be possible to receive sound but no picture.0
