Disposing of mobo?

Options
Hi, our HTPC has died and so we are having to replace mobo and chip. OH reckons can just put in bin but wondering if I should take it to tip for disposal rather than putting in landfill? Is there any regulations regarding their disposal. Not sure if it was the board or chip that died so can't really offer on freecycle (am sure was chip but it is really old and we can't get a new one so upgrading it)

What ever you do remove the hard drive before you dispose of the PC.
Then either keep it as a spare, or remove the data it contains with a hammer!

Mornings make me want to smash things up with a hammer too, but the OP said they're only replacing the motherboard and cpu. ;)

I'm not sure about regulations tbh. There's the weee but they appear to only be for businesses. For the general public it looks like pretty much the same recommendations there's always been.

I'd still offer it on freecycle, the motherboard could be useful to someone even if it's broken and they've bodged a bios update on theirs, swapping the chips over, and there are usually people on freecycle who'll take stuff, test it and build working machines to then give back to freecycle.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

Computer components are full of nasty chemicals, so you should really take it to your local dump, which if it is like our local one, has an area for electrical items. Hopefully the council will dispose of it responsibly.
Or if your conscience doesn't bother you just stick it in the bin.

try freecycling it as faulty stating you dont know if its the cpu or the board.
We kept an old dead board of ours so my son could learn to put a pc together without it mattering if he got it wrong.
Someone might want it for that or to take components from.

Thanks all, will stick on freecycle after OH tells me what sort of chip and board it is :). Wont take a hammer to the hard drive though-really dont want to kill the 500gb hard drive that has ALL our recorded tv and music on it :D (I don't read posts before replying either:rotfl:)
Thanks all for your help, OH reckons is totally useless now but might as well see if someone wants it rather than bin it.
