The Oxford Brookes website ( http://www.brookes.ac.uk/studying/accommodation ) has info about its allocation policy and, from what I understand after a quick scan, providing your son applied for his place in halls by the deadline allocation for able-bodied students on most courses is done by geographical distance of home to uni. How far away are you?

My son went to Nottingham and there were a few students waiting for places in halls there... he said that they all got places within a couple of weeks.

It might give you and your son a bit more hope to learn that the website also states, "Last year we were able to meet all requests from first year students for university accommodation, but we cannot always guarantee you a place in a hall."

His alternative would be to look at other universities with more plentiful student accomodation (e.g. de Montfort university in Leicester) that still have places through clearing. Very best of luck to him.

  • I dropped out of halls after 5 days, lol. But still carried on with my course as i only live and hour and a half away from uni so could commute everyday.
I hated halls though, was sooo different than what i was used to, people banging on the doors at 4 in the morning after a skin full and fire alarms going off. The worst thing was so called "jokers" setting off fire extinguishers which the whole hall had to pay for!!
But i personally thnk i was a bit naive in what i thought halls were going to be like (..Hollyoaks...!!??). Am thinking abnout reapplying to stay there im my last year though...
  • I wouldn't worry too much. Halls aren't all that they are cracked up to be. I lived in the 4th year flats when I was in 1st year due to renovation work on one of the Halls, but my boyfriend lived in Halls and I wouldn't have swapped with him. Most of my friends come from the sports team I am on; to me this is a much better way to make friends as we have things in common; there's no guarantees that you're going to get on with the people your happen to live with. We have social nights too and we also combine competing with weekends away, travelling to competitions in England and Ireland as well as around Scotland. Most sports clubs will have a social membership option too if he doesn't want to compete or there will be other non sporting societies if he's not into sport.

I know people who dropped out in first year, stayed on their course but moved back home or moved from one residence to another so he probably has a very good chance of getting placed in Halls. Within the first 3 or 4 weeks of term too if he nags the accomodation office enough!
