Hi,
We've switched bedrooms and i now need to move our sky+ multiroom box to the other bedroom. However i'm sure the cable won't be long enough.
Sky want £60 to move it.
I've had one quote for an independant installer who wants £76.38 to move the box, £23.50 if extra cable is required, and £6.30 for plugs and accessories............ are they having a laugh???
Whilst i'm waiting for more quotes to come in, I'm wondering how cheap it would be to do it myself.
I need to know what the 2 type of cables i need are called, along with the plugs, and connectors, and the cheapest lace to get them?
Also would the signal strength be effected if i just extend the original cable, or am i best to start again from the dish?
Hopefully i'll get a quote around the £30 mark and i won't have to do it myself, but if i do would appreciate any advice on the best way to do it.
Cheers

you could easily do this yourself (maplins are NOT the cheapest but you get to see the parts you need so gives you an idea)
connectors you need
http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=10447&doy=28m8 these just screw on the cable but you can get these that crimp on http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=26641&criteria=f%20connector&doy=28m8
this is the twin cable you need for sky + (or you can just use two single cables but these are less fuss)
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=219139&C=Maplin&U=SearchTop&T=satellite%20cable&doy=28m8
Maplins are quite expensive....easily cheaper on ebay or even homebase etc
or you could save some money by using the old cable and using these
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1638&C=Maplin&U=SearchTop&T=f%20connectors&doy=28m8
and just buying the required extra cable to extend http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=275&criteria=sat%20cable&doy=28m8
and no the signal shouldn't be degraded as the sky box actually powers the LNB (dish) through the cable, unlike normal tv aerials which have no power to them
just make sure the connections are nice and tight before powering up
i'd go for just extending what you already have as less chance of moving dish and having to climb on the roof etc
I have to say this guy is BRILLIANT and if you email him will send you EVERYTHING you need and is way cheaper than maplins by far http://stores.ebay.co.uk/The-One-Stop-Sat-Shop he will even put everything together before he sends it so you just have to plug it inIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
You can get the parts on ebay, and sometimes in the poundshop
I spent around £10 doing mine, including long runs of wire as it was easier to hide going round the rooms rather than under carpets0 -
Many Thanks,
I've no problem in drilling and running the cables, it's just exactly what cable and connectors i need to extend it. But the advice given has helped me, cheers.0 -
Well, i've managed to reroute the existing cable to the other bedroom. Thought i was going to get away with needing more cable, but i'm 1 metre short of where i want the box.... typical lol0

Highly, Highly, HIGHLY recommended - for the cable and connectors, Maplin would have taken £15 off me - this guy delivers them to me within 2 working days, already assemmbled for £4.
Quality of cable and connectors is the same as you would find in Maplin.
I've connected mine up, no problem at all.
Thus what Sky would have charged me £60 for, i've done myself for £4.
Now that's moneysaving!0
