My Daughter is in her first year as a Student Nurse she starts her first placement on Monday. I am surprised that shes told me she has to join the RCN to get covered by insurance. Is this right? I thought as shes on this NHS course she would already be covered. And I can't belireve they have left it till this time on the Friday before she starts her placement to tell them. Is this right?
Thanx

The RCN and Unison are Unions that represent Nurses. It is wise to join a Union as a Nurse as they will represent you in case of any problems that might arise. For example strikes, if you have a problem at work, you have a complaint or you need representing because someone has complained about you. You are also kept up to date with News etc. Also joining a Union can give you many discounts for certain things for instance Unison who I was with when I was Nursing offers duscounts on many holidays etc. It is benificial to join.Competitions wins 2010

RCN at face value. RCN supply the indemnity and are also a specialist organisation for Nurses, unlike unison, which covers a number of public sector areas.
She should have a look at what both offer and decide from there.0 -
im a student nurse in 1st yr and i have joined RCN for £10 for a whole yr..you dont HAVE to have the insurance buts its recommended, we wer told its mor of a union thing than ins, but if sum1 claimed against you the RCN would cover you, also its good for students as you can access there online library of journals and get other offers too,.
hope she enjoys placement mines in jan!!0 -
Students whilst on placement are supposed to be supernumerary.
They are NOT accountable or responsible as they are under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Which union is a matter of choice,I'm with RCN but missus is with Unison-we therefore get all the gumf between us.
Good Luck with your training and placements.0 -
I'm in rcn..not just for the insurance side of things...but they also supply help with lots of issues to do with work, whether you are an employee or supernumerary.x x x0

I'm with RCN in my final year as a student, they also have loads of information on their website, that's useful for essays etc, I find it useful to be with them. It's a matter of better safe than sorry.0
