As Mable does not appear to have jumped on you, and called you stupid yet (I'm not saying you are stupid, but Mable often uses that word), allow me to participate in a bit of bleater bashing instead.;)

The title of your thread is completely misleading; the charge is not unfair; it is exactly in line with their terms and conditions, which are very similar to every other credit card company.

You have done very well to get them to reduce the charge, and even better to get a DD set up. You have learned from your mistake. Well done.:T

You are doing a great job without my intervention. The OP is not stupid just misguided.

Forgive me for this - i agree that the term and conditions state that you will be charged if you underpay your credit card and so that is not unfair. So then what about the bank and credit card charges we are all fighting about - is that not in the terms and conditions. It may not be ( i dont know) but if it is how is that unfair???

Yes the charges would have been in the Terms and Conditions and they were deemed unfair.

The reason was that a "charge" should be representative of the admin required to process a late payment or credit limit breech (i.e. sending out a letter to the customer) and some of these charges were deemed inappropriate therefore unfair.

However interest is not a "charge" and it is applied in accordance with the rates published in the Terms and Conditions.

It is not impossible that interest charged could be challenged (particularly with hikes of over 100% in recent times) but it has not happened yet and it would be debateable as to what exactly is unfair and what is not.

    Hope this makes sense.
