Buying a council home...

Yeah thats very true...sorry to hear about the trouble with your latest neighbours0

Your post is every so slightly contradictory...
Fair play. Guilty m'lud.
I should have said that in buying their home, they did not deny anybody a council home because the alternative was to continue renting. If the alternative had been to buy privately, then by using RTB they would have denied someone access to a council home.
If the 50% discount (£8,250) had been offered as an incentive to buy privately, they may have taken that and the council home would have stayed in the council's hands.

I thought the council had to have firs trefusal these days if you want to sell your home in the future.
The discount rules changed too.
Have a look at the dpmo site for info on right to buy.

Ok, thanks. Whats this site?0

I suspect Kittiej meant the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister site (ODPM).
This no longer exists, and you need the Department for Communities and Local Government site (DCLG).
RTB information is at

the answer to my point is that once bought you are the one who has to pay for the upkeep and you cannot spend what a council can spend..where i live there are loads of bought ones and they are now the ones in the worst state because the council has rebricked theirs and the owner occupiers ave not been able to afford the money to pay for it so they are now eyesores...It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -
Thanks Squinty, yes I did.
I wasn't aware about this new department that's been created though so apologies to OP. So forget what I said and do what Squinty said.Karma - the consequences of ones acts."It's OK to falter otherwise how will you know what success feels like?"1 debt v 100 days £20000
