Does anyone know of an electronics supplier other than maplin, preferably an online store, preferably in the UK?

I'm after a J210 N-Channel JFET to make a guitar pre-amp.

Otherwise does anyone have any schematics using an alternate opamp.

Mant Thanks

RS and Farnell are your best bets.

    Rapid are quite useful too.

But it seems you can find them on eBay.

Try Greenweld if they are still going, look in the ad section of Elektor Magazine or similar Electronics magazines they have loads of suppliers which are more competative than the latter mentioned big boys, you can normally pick up good bargains, Ebay is good to for the hard to find components. What are you building? I used to do alot of hombrew stuff years ago but went the IT route.

I'm building a small preamp to go onboard the 12 string acoustic guitar I'm building.

I'm looking at making this preamp

But if anyone has links to any other/better/ preamps, especially if you have built them yourself please put the link in this thread so I can check it out?

I know it would probably be easier to buy one, even if I had to gut it, but the idea of this guitar is that it is all hand built, apart from the electronic components, strings and tuners.

  • What are you going to be running the pre into?

Well it would be easier to buy a black box off the shelf but where is the fun in that, money can't buy the satisfaction of seeing/hearing your own work in action! Are building it on Vero Board or getting a PCB done?

I'm running it into an old 10 watt amp. I've tried it with a small box preamp a friend has run off my fender acoustic that I put a buzzer pickup in and it makes so much difference.

At this moment in time it's going on a vero board, but if I can find the right circuit, I could be tempted to try my hand at making a PCB. It all depends on the size of the PCB, its got to be quite small to go in the pocket I'm routing into the guitar body.

  • You seriously need to take pictures and blog this for those of us who are really into guitars (ie me). I love seeing other people's set ups :D

    Never thought of that.

Think I'll start to take pictures of the build and keep a log on one of the forums on here, if there is such a place to do that. Maybe have to start up my own site, or do it via my myspace.
