Joint credit card with poor history.

in Credit cards
I have a relative who has no credit history, as he has lived in Romania, at various addresses, but he has now returned home to the UK, to live.
I have for the last few months, loaned him my Nationwide DEBIT card, and he pays in, and draws out of the hole in the wall, without any problems, but what he really requires is a CREDIT card, in his own name, so that when he goes on holiday, he will be able to hire a car at the airport.
All of the rental companies, require a CREDIT, not DEBIT card imprint.
I have just received the voters roll form through the post, so to start him off on the credit application trail, he will be my new lodger.
My credit history is good, as is that of my wife; in the past I have just had debit cards, but I recently applied for my first CREDIT card, (to enable me also to rent a car),and Nationwide sent me one with a £10,000 limit.
The questions are, will Nationwide allow my relative to be a joint cardholder with me, (I realise that any debt he runs up will be mine?),..... and secondly,
Is there any way to rent a car without a CREDIT card?,my loaned debit card is no use,as the name is different of course to the driving licence.
Thanks in anticipation.

There is no such thing as a joint credit card. You can have an additional cardholder though.
Can't you get him to open an account designed for foreigners (e.g. HSBC's Passport account - £3?/month) - these will normally be upgraded to full features after a few months good operation.
Or he could get a Romanian credit card...0 -

Thanks for that sdooley, yes, it is an additional card holder account, that we will use jointly.
He is not a foreigner however, just went over there to live for a while.
I will look at the passport account, to see if it is available in this case.
Thanks again.0 -
if he's british and has an income and is on the electoral roll he can apply for 'beginners' cards like barclaycard initial, vanquis, cap 1... shocking APRs but if he clears the debt each monmth it won't matter
or has he tried his own bank.0 -

Thanks for that CLAPTON. He will not be on the voters roll til I launch him in a few days time. Are the beginners cards "proper" CREDIT cards, that would be acceptable at the car hire desk? Thanks.0 -
yes, they are normal, proper credit cards but with low credit limits and very high APRs... but if used properly (i.e. use regularly, paying in full and on time ) they will quickly build up a good credit record.
also note it may take a fair time before the electoral roll info reaches the credit reference agencies .. we're talking local government here remember0
