ADT intruder alarms - who owns the system?

I bought a house with ADT intruder alarms in it. The control panel is broken, ADT would only replaced it if I got a contract with them. They are quoting £230 to replace the panel, and before they do that, I need to sign up to them first. Their cheapest option is the "bells only" option which is £120 per year. I don't see why you would pay £120 for having an offline system.

I then called other Alarm companies who ask if is the ADT equipment rented? I called ADT and they told me the equipments are owned by them, and they would remove it if I decide not to continue with them. My question is that would ADT even come to remove the system if I don't continue with them. I doubt it. So I want to ask another company to install an alarm system using the existing sensors. But I am being asked this question of is the equipment rented. How can I get them to install an alarm system using the existing sensors?

  • Why don't you have a fresh new install, if the box is broken will something else fail!!

On the issue of ADT and their kit ask them to remove it, if they don't or drag their feet start charging them a storage fee.

Not the answer you were expecting but just a thought.

If ADT truly own the system then they most likely own the sensors as well.

If its a wired system they probably own the wiring but would be unlikely to remove them.

This is good as installing and hiding wiring is the most difficult part of an alarm installation.

I would get them to remove it and ask a local installer to quote for a replacement or DIY if you are able.

we are with ADT and when installed the alarm was FREE if we signed up to live monitoring for one year, told that if we chose not to continue after one year the alarm belonged to us. if you sign up to service they may fix for free as part of contract as you need a working system for it to work. worth asking. good luck. DIY systems now cordless and easy to install these days as another option. good luck.
  • If the system is owned by ADT, shouldn't they replace the control panel? Why do I have to pay £230 for a system that is owned by them??? Strange, isn't it?
